Governor's Mansion Restoration Fund
What is the Texas Governor's Mansion Restoration Fund (TGMRF)?
The Fund was established to raise money needed to help restore the Texas Governor's Mansion, which was severely damaged by arson June 8, 2008. The Fund is led by Texas First Lady Anita Perry and The Honorable Pamela Willeford, U.S Ambassador to Switzerland 2003 - 2006.
How will the mansion restoration be funded?
The funding for restoration efforts will come from both the Texas Governor's Mansion Restoration Fund and $22 million in state funds appropriated to the State Preservation Board by the 81st Legislature. The private funds will provide for the best and most historic elements, as well as to ensure the 153-year-old Governor's Mansion is safe, functional and historically preserved for at least another 150 years. As of September, 2009, the public has donated more than $3.5 million to the TGMRF to supplement the funds appropriated by the Legislature.
How much will it cost to restore the Mansion?
The State Preservation Board, working with a specialized design team of architects, construction and preservation professionals, has developed cost estimates to restore the historic structure. Preserving the historic fabric while improving security, updating mechanical systems, and making ADA improvements will cost more than $20 million. Several factors affect the estimates and historic restoration is a costly undertaking. Some elements of the mansion restoration present unique challenges, such as the front porch columns, which are stable but badly charred. As with any home construction project, the final cost will depend on the details but experts at the State Preservation Board are confident the final cost will not exceed the estimates.
How long will construction take?
Restoration could take several years.
How can I help?
Donate! The best way to volunteer assistance with restoration efforts is to spread the word about the TGMR Fund. Any donation, large or small, will go directly to the restoring this Texas treasure. We are unable to accept donations of furnishings or artwork; all of the mansion's historic artifacts and furnishings were in storage at the time of the fire and will return to the mansion after it is restored. Additionally, all construction-related donations should be offered to the State Preservation Board.
How do I donate?

Is my donation tax deductible?
The Texas Governor's Mansion Restoration Fund is an IRS approved §501 (c)(3) charitable organization and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Why wasn't the Governor's Mansion insured?
Every year the state reviews the issue of insuring state buildings, and the legislature has consistently decided to self insure, except in those cases where construction bonds require insurance. We are exploring opportunities to protect the Mansion during construction. The destruction of the Mansion was a criminal act of vandalism. Arson is difficult to insure against and enhanced security is our greatest protection.
Is there an update on the arson investigation?
Law enforcement continues its investigation into the June 8th fire at the Governor's Mansion. The state is offering a $50,000 reward for information that can lead authorities to the arsonist. Further questions should be directed to the State Fire Marshall's Office.
