Apr 3, 2009 - Governor Perry Proclaims April 3, 2009 as Texas Film Day
A Message from the Governor:
Texas is replete with diverse landscapes, iconic legends and a wealth of artistic talent, so it is not surprising that the Lone Star State has long been a favorite location for motion picture and television productions.
From the silent World War I epic "Wings" - the first film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture - to the long-running "Austin City Limits" concert series, Texas has been the birthplace of an incredibly wide-ranging selection of movies and television shows. Many classics and soon-to-be-classics, including "Giant," "Terms of Endearment," "Bonnie and Clyde," "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men," were made here; so were cult favorites "Dazed and Confused," "Waiting for Guffman" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Other Texas films include westerns, war stories, comedies, adventures, romantic comedies, dramas and everything in between.
These productions support our state's economy through their reliance on Texas' highly skilled film technicians and wealth of talented actors and artists. Over the past decade, the moving image industry, including film, television, video, commercials, animation and interactive video games, has spent more than $2.2 billion and created more than 38,000 jobs in Texas, while highlighting our state's beauty, character and attractions to audiences around the world.
As we gather at the third annual AFI DALLAS International Film Festival to celebrate the art of film and showcase the talents of some of our best and brightest filmmakers, I am especially proud of our state's contributions to these industries, and I look forward to their continued growth and development within the state.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim April 3, 2009, Texas Film Day.
