AESTHETICS OF EDITING

This class introduces students to film and video editing with a special focus on aesthetics, rhythm, and making creative choices, as opposed to a more technical focus as seen in other post-production classes in the series. Ideally, students should have Final Cut Pro experience before taking this class, but it is not a requirement. Click for details.

DV & HD CAMERA BASICS WORKSHOP
Sundays, September 12 - 19, 12pm - 6pm

Your choice in camera and skill with it are crucial components to ensuring great work. How you frame and follow action is more important than the camera you choose, but the camera does make a difference.
This class will approach standard compositional and shooting practices that will help your work with any camera and then move on to discussing the key differences between the digital and high definition cameras now on the market, to help you decide on the best camera for the jobs you need to do or work with the camera you've already chosen. In this course, students work with the advanced tools and features. Students will enhance their ability to create accurate masks and image effects, to retouch images, to work with videofiles, and to automate repetitive tasks. Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to use the various tools to mask and clip layers to edit an image, create and vector paths, use the tools to enhance an image, create special effects, use the video tools to edit the video files and automate tasks in Adobe Photoshop. PRE-PRODUCTION & PLANNING WORKSHOP
Thursdays, September 16 - 23, 6pm-9pm

Gain understanding of the role and responsibilities of a producer in the production of a digital video or film. This class focuses on such topics as the stages of production and the roles of crew (including producer, director, assistant director, editor, composer, etc), creating a production plan, as well as scheduling and budgeting basics. PRODUCTION ACCOUNTING CLERK WORKSHOP
Saturday & Sunday, September 18 & 19, 10am - 6pm

The Production Accounting Clerk Workshop is a two-day course, taught by industry professionals, that gives you the skills needed to hit the ground running to find work as a production clerk. Participants are taught details of the responsibilities of each member of the accounting staff. In all, participants learn the skills needed for these positions including production terminology, how to read a budget, and how to handle various types of expenses including accounts payable, petty cash and purchase orders. The workshop is designed to introduce the participants to a Production Accountant who can direct them to resources for finding employment. Participants who complete the training will have learned the nuts and bolts of Production Accounting and the tools needed to build such a career. Upon completing the Workshop, participants receive a Production Accountant Training Certification from The Texas Film Commission, which can be included on a resume, and a listing in the Texas Production Directory.
*Class participants should bring a small calculator. Tuition will cover lunch.
Prerequisites:
- Registrants must have either practical experience doing bookkeeping or some undergraduate course work in accounting.
- Must be 18 years of age
- A legal resident of Texas
- Have a valid photo ID
- Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

This Intro to After Effects training class is designed for the beginning user. This course will help you understand the fundamental basics of animation & compositing. After Effects is an essential tool for any non linear video editor. You will learn to perform basic editing functions while familiarizing yourself with the user interface. Topics include basic setup, adjusting and customizing preferences and settings, capturing video and audio, various editing and trimming techniques, ripple, roll, slip and slide tools, audio editing and audio creation, finishing and final output. This class is designed for anyone looking to edit professional-quality video using Final Cut Pro. Understanding of the Macintosh operating system and basic computer navigation is desired. It's as much a truism that "you don't have to light video" as it is that a lot of video looks very poorly lit. We'll examine traditional cinematic lighting values and how they can be applied to your video work... without hiring the gaffer with a grip truck. We'll have tips and tricks for low-budget lighting in the field and inexpensive lighting equipment that you can buy at a hardware store so that your video can look its best. Additionally, we'll discuss the differences between various cameras and how they capture and manipulate color as well as lightly touch on color correction issues for finishing your work in editing system like Final Cut Pro or AVID. AVANT-GARDE & EXPERIMENTAL FILMMAKING
Thursdays, October 7 - November 11, 6:30pm-9pm $350 ASoF's Avant-Garde & Experimental Filmmaking course is a comprehensive introduction to experimental filmmaking. The students will explore the history and evolution of experimental film and are encouraged to navigate the images in their minds to create their own individual works. This course is dedicated to the appreciation of film as an art form and a medium of expression. Students will learn how to use and shoot on Super 8mm cameras, process their films and edit their footage to produce their individual Avant-Garde short film.Their films will be featured in a salon and screening at the completion of the course. YOUTH SCREENWRITING 1
Saturdays, September 25 - November 13, 11am-1pm

This course is an introduction to visual writing and dramatic narrative and is designed for pre-teens and teens ages 9 and over. We will look at how stories are told on film. Students will write one short film script during the course of the eight weeks, we will discuss the elements of a good story telling, screenplay format, structure, and plot. Students will be divided into groups based on age and skill level. Click for details.

TEEN ACTING: AUDITIONING ON CAMERA
Saturdays, September 18 - October 9, 12pm-2pm *No class on Oct. 2 $150 ASoF is so excited to have Michael Stahl-David here teaching this fall! Students interested in acting will benefit greatly from this one-time opportunity to work with a professional actor. During this three week class students will learn how to audition on camera and to prepare themselves for professional auditions in feature films and television with guest teacher Michael Stahl-David. Each student will leave the course with one complete audition video to use for future auditions. Michael Stahl-David is probably best known for his television role as Sean, the youngest brother, on NBC series The Black Donnelly's and for his lead role in the film Cloverfield. Michael began his acting career in the theater in Chicago, appearing in plays for the Steppenwolf Theater and other notable venues. He moved to New York in 2005 where he appeared off-Broadway and had guest roles on Law & Order. Michael has also directed his own web series called Michael Stahl-David: Behind the Star for Crackle and he is currently in Austin shooting a one-hour television series called My Generation for ABC. DIGITAL FILMMAKING
Saturdays, October 23 - December 18, 1:00pm - 3:30pm

This course provides hands-on exercises in composition, camera movement, storyboarding, image, sound development and editing instruction in Final Cut Pro for young filmmakers of all levels. Each student shoots numerous digital video exercises during class. Students will be guided through both the technical aspects of filmmaking and the various film genres that influence Independent and Mainstream Cinema. All films are screened for the public at the end of the semester at the Alamo Drafthouse during the Loud & Clear Youth Film Festival. Click for details.
