    Gov. Perry: College Credit for Heroes Helps Get our Best and Brightest Back into the Workforce
    Gov. Rick Perry touted Texas' efforts to help veterans enter the workforce more quickly, highlighting Central Texas College and other community college districts around the state that have implemented the College Credit for Heroes program. The governor first called for the creation of the program in June 2010, when he established a comprehensive veterans' initiative in advance of the legislative session.

He also directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to follow up with Texas institutions of higher education on the progress they have made in implementing cost efficiency measures called for in September 2009 through executive order RP 73.

    USAF Decision Puts Gulf Coast Lives in Danger
    As Hurricane Ike neared the Texas coast in 2008, hundreds of hospital patients and nursing home residents were in harm's way, facing a difficult escape from the storm's path. That's when the C-130s of the 136th Airlift Wing based in Fort Worth, Texas, went into action. That year, for the first time in U.S. history, C-130s were utilized to help move patients to safety ahead of a storm's arrival. In all, between Hurricanes Ike and Hurricane Gustav, 800 people were airlifted to safety.

    Federal Government Unable to Deal with Surge of Minors
    Over the first six months of the federal fiscal year, more than 5,200 unaccompanied minors crossed the border illegally into the United States. That figure represents a surge of more 90 percent over the same period last year, with more than 1,300 children arriving in March alone. Most of them, 80 percent in fact, are coming in through Texas.
