Texas Department of State Health Services is working with local jurisdictions to see that restaurants closed by Hurricane Ike are safely reopened to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. Retail food establishments must contact their regulating authority before reopening. DSHS also is providing support to grocery stores and pharmacies to assure that all food, cosmetic, drug and medical device products that have been damaged are destroyed.Texas Department of State Health Services

Locating loved ones who evacuated during Hurricane Ike

To locate residents who evacuated with transportation assistance from the state, call 2-1-1 or visit https://disastersafe.redcross.org/
To locate medical special needs evacuees, please call Department of State Health Services at toll-free (888) 777-5320. Phones will be answered from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and callers may leave a message at other times. Callers need to provide information such as the name, address, date of birth, gender, last known location and specific medical special need of the evacuee.

Dialysis Patients Urged to Call Toll-Free Number for Services
Health officials continue to urge kidney dialysis patients affected by Hurricane Ike to call (866) 407-3773 to locate dialysis services. Many dialysis patients have evacuated from coastal areas to other parts of Texas. Latest Ike Update from Texas Department of State Health Services
DSHS provided tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis A and flu vaccine to Beaumont and the Orange County health departments. DSHS also shipped more than 350 oxygen canisters to medical special needs facilities.Texas Department of State Health Services

DSHS is coordinating the deployment of federal Disaster Medical Assistance Teams
Texas Department of State Health Services: DSHS is coordinating the deployment of federal Disaster Medical Assistance Teams to assist with hospital emergency room infrastructure and medical shelter support. DSHS also is evaluating medical transportation assets to ensure that local needs are being met. DSHS continues to follow up with area hospitals and dialysis facilities to assess conditions, operations and resource needs. DSHS is assessing the capacity of medical special needs shelters to determine if additional capacity is required.Texas Department of State Health Services
