Gov. Perry Urges HUD to End Delays on Texas Hurricane Recovery Funding
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry sent a letter yesterday to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan urging the expedited approval of Texas’ disaster recovery funding. HUD claimed last week that “there is no compelling need to immediately approve” Texas’ application for continued recovery funding for hurricanes Ike and Dolly.

Gov. Perry Announces Disaster Recovery and Renewal Commission
HOUSTON – Gov. Rick Perry today announced the creation of the Governor’s Commission for Disaster Recovery and Renewal, an advisory panel of public and private sector experts who will create a plan to assist Texas communities with recovery efforts after a natural disaster. The governor also announced that he has directed the Texas Department of Transportation to immediately begin assisting with debris removal in Southeast Texas.

Gov. Perry Makes Second Appeal to FEMA for Assistance for Texans Affected by Hurricane Dolly
AUSTIN – In a letter to President George W. Bush, Gov. Rick Perry today requested FEMA expedite the state’s request for Individual Assistance and Public Assistance to Texans affected by Hurricane Dolly. The governor’s initial July 23rd request for individual aid was not immediately granted. Rather, the agency directed the state to conduct preliminary damage assessments before Individual or Public Assistance would be granted.

Texas Granted Presidential Disaster Declaration
AUSTIN – President George W. Bush today granted Gov. Perry’s request for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration, which will provide assistance to 15 Texas counties. This afternoon, the governor and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn toured the impacted areas and were briefed by local officials regarding ongoing emergency response efforts as Tropical Storm Dolly continues to move slowly through south Texas.

Texas Responds to Hurricane Dolly
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry will today ask President George W. Bush for a major presidential disaster declaration as a result of Hurricane Dolly’s escalation to a Category 2 storm shortly before making landfall in south Texas. The Presidential Disaster Declaration will provide federal resources to support re-entry and recovery efforts.

Rick Perry today issued a disaster declaration in response to the imminent threat posed by Tropical Storm Dolly to Aransas, Bexar, Brooks, Calhoun, Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria and Willacy counties. The governor’s declaration allows the state to initiate necessary preparedness efforts, such as pre-deploying resources requested by local officials to ensure their communities are ready to respond to severe weather.
