Latest Update for Texas Education Agency
TEA Commissioner of Education Robert Scott has issued a letter of guidance to school districts that offers information about enrolling and providing services to displaced students.  Any child whose family has temporarily relocated due to Hurricane Ike is classified as homeless under the federal McKinney-Vento Act.  This law allows children to enroll in any school district without having to provide the usual student records nor must they show proof of residency.  The agency has taken a number of steps to assist districts are enrolling evacuees. Those steps include providing additional state and federal financial assistance to districts, allowing districts to order additional textbooks and granting a waiver of the 22-1 student/teacher ratio in kindergarten through fourth grade to any district that had a significant influx of hurricane evacuees.  A copy of the commissioner’s letter is posted here: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/hurricane/corr.html
