The Department of Music and Drama at Prairie View A&M University offers a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Applied Music (Performance) and Music with teacher certification. A strong emphasis of the department is the personal attention given by the faculty to the academic and musical development of each student. The University benefits from the cultural events of the Greater Houston Metropolitan area. Members of the faculty are solid performers and teachers who have earned degrees from the best universities and professional schools of music in the U.S. University talent scholarships are awarded to those students who meet the qualifications. Stipends are available to participants in the Marching Band. Outstanding alumni include Brenda Wimberly, Leontyne Price Fellowship award winner; Dr. Robert Henry, Director, Houston Ebony Opera Guild; Dr. Danny R. Kelley, concert pianist; and Dr. Agnes B. Curry-Jones, Chairperson of the Department of Fine Arts, Huston-Tillotson College, to name a few. Performance opportunities include the Concert Choir (75 members; Mrs. Jan Taylor, Director), Brass Ensemble (15 members), Marching Band (200 members), Percussion Ensemble (12 members; Larry E. Jones, Director), Symphonic Band (50 members; Dr. Lucius R. Wyatt, Director), Jazz Band (20 member; Robert Sanders, Director), Clarinet Choir (Sheila Patterson, Director), and Flute Ensemble (Dr. Wendy I. Bergin, Director).
