Texas Music License Plate: Purchase Plates and Grant Application
The Texas Music Office's Music Education & Community Grant Program (aka the License Plate Grant) seeks to provide opportunities for the next generation of Texas musicians and to provide support for music programming in under-served and under-resourced communities. $22 from the $30 fee from the purchase of every Texas music specialty license plate goes directly toward providing music instruments and lessons to Texas school children in need around the state. In addition, this fund is able to partner with non-profit organizations to create experiences featuring Texas music in under-served communities statewide.
The TMO administers the Music Educational and Community Programs project. The TMO is accepting applications for grant projects in the 2024 Fiscal Year that will benefit music-related education and community programs sponsored by a nonprofit organization based in Texas.
Only 501(c)(3) nonprofits based in Texas may apply. The eligibility criteria for the nonprofit, includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Be a nonprofit organized and based in Texas;

The Texas Music Office (TMO) in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism is the only state music office in the nation. Since 1990, TMO has fostered the economic development of Texas music businesses, Texas musicians, and Texas communities. The Music Friendly Texas program, the first in the nation since introduced by TMO in 2016, provides 55 (and counting) Texas communities with a network for fostering music industry development, and sends a clear message to industry professionals that certified communities are serious about attracting and developing music industry growth. TMO also manages a comprehensive Texas music industry database, acts as a liaison between music businesses and government offices, affects policy at the state and federal level, publicizes significant industry developments, and attracts essential music industry to the Lone Star State. TMO also provides grants to underfunded and underserved communities for music education, and administers the historic Texas Music Incubator Rebate (TMIR) Program for Texas music venues and festival promoters.
