Gov. Perry Appoints Three to OneStar National Service Commission

Reappoints Diggles as Chairman and Names Schwertner as Vice Chairman

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry appointed three to the OneStar National Service Commission. The commission works with the OneStar Foundation to further national service initiatives in Texas and administer the AmeriCorps Texas program.

Walter G. Diggles Sr. of Jasper is reappointed as chairman of the commission. He is executive director of the Deep East Texas Council of Governments and senior pastor of the New Lighthouse Church of God in Christ Ministries. He is a corporate board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Deep East Texas, and past president of the Boys and Girls Club of Jasper. Diggles is director of the Pineywoods Economic Partnership and First National Bank of Jasper. He also volunteers on the executive committee of the Boy Scouts of America Three Rivers Council. Diggles received a bachelor’s degree from LaSalle University. His term expires March 15, 2010.

Dolores Schwertner of Miles is the Concho Valley Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) project director for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, and is replacing Martha Tatum of Houston as vice chairman. She is a member and past president of the Texas Association of Senior Service Corps Directors, Texas Association of RSVP Directors and Area Agency on Aging Regional Advisory Council. Schwertner is also a board member of the United Way of Concho Valley and serves on the Faith in Action Advisory Board. Her term expires March 15, 2009.

Reymundo Torres of El Paso is manager and funeral director of Kaster-Maxon and Futrell Funeral Home. He is a vice president and director of the Texas Funeral Directors Association, El Paso Region and past chairman of the National American Red Cross Tissue Services Advisory Committee. Torres is a member of the Skyline Lion’s Club, past president of the Lion’s Club International, and acting chairman of the Texas Lions Camp. He replaces O. Rene Diaz of San Antonio. His term expires March 15, 2009.
