Gov. Perry Signs Legislation to Place Tejano Monument on Capitol Grounds

Friday, May 29, 2009  •  Press Release

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today signed House Bill (HB) 4114, which allows for the placement of a Tejano monument on the south grounds of the Texas State Capitol.

“It is fitting that we should devote space on the historic south grounds of our state capitol to commemorate the contributions of our Latino brothers and sisters throughout the ages,” Gov. Perry said. “This monument captures the essence of our state’s Hispanic history and the independent spirit of our entire state.”

The governor was joined by bill authors Sen. Judith Zaffirini and Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer for the signing.

“Tejanos have played a role in Texas history since before there was a Texas, and contributed to the rich and diverse culture our state is known for,” Rep. Martinez Fischer said. “I applaud Gov. Perry for recognizing the contributions of Tejanos and for making the vision of so many a reality.”

HB 4114 provides an exception to the State Preservation Board’s rules allowing the Tejano monument to be placed on the historic south grounds. The bill also issues a moratorium on new monuments being placed on the south grounds.

"Today we celebrate the realization of our dream to place a majestic Tejano monument on the historic south grounds of our Texas State Capitol," Sen. Zaffirini said. "Simultaneously, we celebrate the governor and Legislature's commitment to honor the impressive and inspirational history and contributions of Tejanos."

Created by Laredo artist Armando Hinojosa, the bronze monument will consist of 11 life-size sculptures. The monument will not single out specific Tejano heroes and pioneers, but instead commemorates the 500-year role of Tejanos in Texas and the Spanish-Mexican legacy in the state from 1500 to 1800.
