Gov. Perry Activates State Resources as Winter Storm Threatens Texas Communities

Monday, December 19, 2011  •  Austin, Texas  •  Press Release

Gov. Rick Perry has activated Texas Military Forces (TMF) personnel and equipment as a precautionary measure as a severe winter storm threatens communities in the Texas Panhandle. These resources will be used to provide assistance as necessary on roadways as the storm makes its way through the area.

"I urge Texans in the path of this winter storm to remain cautious and heed warnings from local officials as this severe winter storm may create dangerous driving conditions for holiday travel," Gov. Perry said. "We will continue to closely monitor this storm to ensure state resources are available to assist impacted communities. As always, Texas is thankful for the brave men and women who stand ready to respond to events that place their fellow Texans in harm's way."

Heavy snow and strong north winds are expected to strike the northern and western Texas Panhandle today through Tuesday morning. Snowfall accumulations of up to six inches are likely, with higher accumulations expected across the northwest Texas Panhandle. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for several counties, as winds are expected to increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph behind the cold front today, producing blowing and drifting snow.

The following state resources responding include:

• 20 TMF personnel and six high profile vehicles have been activated and prepositioned to Amarillo, Dalhart and Dumas; two high profile vehicles with personnel at each location.

• All TxDOT district offices in the affected area are on a high level of readiness to clear snow and ice from the roadways.

• The DPS Disaster District Committee (DDC) in Amarillo has been activated, and the DDC in Lubbock is prepared to fully activate should weather conditions warrant it. DPS troopers in the impacted and surrounding area are prepared to provide assistance to motorists and others.
