Gov. Perry Keynotes Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce State of the State Luncheon
Gov. Rick Perry highlighted Texas' many accomplishments in the last decade to establish one of the strongest jobs climates and economies in the nation, and reiterated key policy initiatives that he plans to pursue during the 83rd legislative session to maintain our state's long-term prosperity and economic success.
"As we approach the next legislative session, we need to take a hard look at reducing the tax burden on all Texans," Gov. Perry said. "We also need to reduce the demands on our innovators so they're free to innovate and turn their great ideas into great success. And we need to continue streamlining our government to do more with the resources we have and delivering needed services in an effective and efficient manner."
Gov. Perry highlighted several priorities and policy initiatives for the upcoming session:
•Texas Budget Compact: practice truth-in-budgeting, support a stricter constitutional limit on spending, oppose any new taxes or tax increases, make the small business tax exemption permanent, preserve a strong Rainy Day Fund and cut unnecessary and redundant government programs.
•Welfare and Unemployment Insurance Reforms: authorize drug screening of benefit applicants which will prevent tax dollars from going to drug abusers and drug dealers, and instead to the people who truly need it.
•Higher Education Reforms: four-year tuition freeze for incoming freshmen, linking a portion of each university's funding to student outcomes and expanding the number of universities offering degrees for $10,000.
