Statement on HHSC Directive to Improve Adult Protective Services

Wednesday, May 19, 2004  •  Press Release

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement concerning the preliminary review of the Adult Protective Services (APS) program.

“I am encouraged that Commissioner Hawkins and HHSC have acted quickly and appropriately on the directive I issued in April ordering a thorough review of the state’s Adult Protective Services programs. This preliminary review marks the first step in a process that I expect will remedy the serious problems that have plagued this program. Texans can be assured that we will not rest until the problems are corrected and our most vulnerable citizens – the elderly and those with disabilities – receive the protection they deserve from the state. I have confidence that Commissioner Hawkins will reorganize APS and develop new guidelines, oversights and coordination efforts that will allow APS to more effectively serve our citizens.”
