AUSTIN – The following is a statement by Gov. Rick Perry on the Senate's initial proposal to reform education in Texas:

"I applaud Lt. Governor Dewhurst and members of the Texas Senate for taking a first step toward reforming our educational system. This plan marks a good starting point and shows that legislative leaders are committed to addressing this important issue this session as am I. I look forward to working with members of the Senate and House as we continue discussions on the specific details of education reform."
