Today I have declared Sunday, September 16, a “Day of Prayer” for all of Texas. In their respective places of worship, or in the quietness of their homes, I would ask that Texans lift up in their hearts the victims of this tragedy through prayer.
As someone who served in our nation’s Air Force, having traveled to Europe and the Middle East, I learned what a unique place America is. We are a benevolent nation that values freedom, and seeks to expand that freedom to people around the globe.
We are a people with an indomitable spirit. For more than two hundreds years we have sustained attacks, we have suffered tremendous loss, but we have never yielded to the cause of evil.
America can be wounded, but the American Spirit will not be broken. The spirit of the American people in times of tremendous adversity is to unify, and support those who are suffering through tragedy.
The outpouring of support across this nation is indicative of that spirit. I would continue to encourage Texans to donate blood…to fly the American flag from rooftops and town squares, to pray to the God who has sustained us during this darkest hour, and who will be a source of continued strength, and to refrain from panic-like behavior such as stockpiling gasoline or groceries.
America will get through this tragedy as it has the tragedies of our past, freedom will prevail.
