Thank you, John (Nau).  I appreciate your friendship, and your work in so many fields to build a better Texas.

I am honored to be here tonight with so many great Texans who have contributed much to the story of Texas.

I am a proud supporter of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum because I believe preserving and celebrating Texas’ unique history is a worthy cause.

The name that graces the side of this building is that of a true Texas legend...
...and like a true Texas legend...
...he still looms larger than life, even in death.

Texas is a land of legends...
...with a history written in large part by ordinary men and women who dared to dream dreams far greater than their humble beginnings...
...and whose hearts were as big as their hides were tough.

It’s that history that sets Texas apart from...
...and above, in my opinion...
...all the other states.

Tonight I am humbled just to take part in the honoring of three memorable authors of Texas history...
...Lady Bird Johnson...
...and President Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush.

Their contributions to our state... our nation... and the entire world... are fitting for leaders from a state as grand as Texas.

They guided us through some of America’s toughest times and finest moments...
...through historic conflicts played out on the world stage...
...from the height of the Cold War to its ultimate end.

And they showed the world what it means to be a Texan...
...strong but gentle...
...compassionate to those in need...
...and unafraid to stand for what they believed in.

Or in the simple but eloquent words of another great Texan, Sam Houston...
...they did right, and risked consequences.

America remains the land of freedom today because they stood for freedom with the pride that is in the heart of every man, woman and child who calls this place home.

Like so many figures from Texas history that came before them...
...they began a journey...
...chasing a dream born in Texas...
...and forever changed the world.

The story of Texas would not be complete without their pen.

Mr. President... Luci... we are eternally grateful.

Thank you, may God bless you, and may God bless Texas.
