Cabela’s Opening Buda

Thank you, Bob (Cole).  I am honored to be here with Cabela’s Senior Vice President Mike Callahan... Judge Powers... Mayor Trube and so many leaders and friends who are here to welcome “the world’s foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear” to Buda...

I know I speak for thousands of fellow hunters when I say we have waited anxiously for this to arrive, like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Finally this day has arrived, and the good news for Buda is that there are about 3.5 million people across Texas, in neighboring states and throughout the South who are just as excited as I am that Cabela’s is open now in Central Texas.

In the first year alone, this location and the one in Fort Worth are expected to attract more than 10 million visitors...
...about half of which will be from out of state.

That’s why the State of Texas is spending $12 million to improve highways in Buda so that vehicles and pedestrians have safe and easy access, and so visitors will want to come back again in the future.

And when they come they will not only spend money on hunting and fishing gear, but at hotels, restaurants, gas stations and other retailers.

In the long run, that means billions of new dollars flowing through the local and state economy...
...even before you count the $100 million Cabela’s spent to get both stores up and running...
...or the 600 new full-time workers and hundreds of part-time workers they will employ...
...or the thousands of potential new jobs that will be created as other businesses expand to meet the demand created by Cabela’s visitors.

Every job Cabela’s creates not only strengthens our entire economy... gives another Texas family the opportunity to afford their dreams.

That is why I was proud to help bring both Cabela’s stores to Texas with a $600,000 grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund.

And with today’s grand opening, the people of Texas are going to see a stunning return on their investment...
...measured not only in jobs and revenue, but in a higher quality of life.

The same can be said of our other Enterprise Fund investments...
...including an expansion by Washington Mutual I announced earlier today made possible by $15 million from the Enterprise Fund.

With 4,200 new jobs coming to Texas, it is the largest job creation project in the United States for the first 6 months of 2005.

Total Enterprise Fund investments to date will ultimately bring 28,000 jobs to Texas and add more than $6 billion to our economy.

I am proud the legislature reauthorized the Enterprise Fund with $100 million in new money, so we can continue to attract the jobs that pave the path to prosperity for our people.
As the legislature continues the debate on school finance reform, I can’t help but note that today’s grand opening is evidence that our current tax structure is one that welcomes growth and opportunity.

I will also note that...
...according to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis...
...the Texas economy is outpacing the entire U.S. economy.

There are a lot of reasons Texas is an attractive place to do business:...
...we have no personal income tax...
...a reasonable regulatory climate...
...and a business tax structure that creates incentives for growth.

The school finance plan I have proposed to the legislature maintains economic certainty while ensuring all corporations pay their fair share of the franchise tax.

And it will allow our state’s economy to continue to grow with many more job creation announcements in the coming months and years.
I want to see more expansions and more jobs created all across this state... we are witnessing here in Buda with today’s opening of Cabela’s.

Mr. Callahan, on behalf of the people of Texas I am proud to welcome Cabela’s to Buda.

We are glad to have you, and may our relationship continue to grow and prosper for many years to come.
