A safe and secure state is a productive, successful state. Since taking office, Gov. Perry has provided strategic direction and encouraged a significant state investment in initiatives that protect Texans. Embracing priorities that comprehensively address the state’s security needs, he has focused resources on certain key areas including border security, public safety, victims’ rights, law enforcement and criminal justice.

Disaster Preparedness and Response
In a state with 367 miles of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, nearly 7,000 square miles of water and more than 260,000 square miles of land area, Texas is no stranger to natural threats like hurricanes, wildfires and flooding. Under Gov. Perry’s direction, the state’s Department of Homeland Security coordinates efforts to prepare for and recover from disasters.

Public Safety
State leaders can never lose sight of the fact that citizen safety is an overriding priority. Gov. Perry has established a number of programs that improve the state’s domestic tranquility, including those that direct available financial resources into essential issues like victim’s rights, support of peace officers and school safety. Public Safety will continue to be an essential component of Gov. Perry’s leadership of Texas.

Securing the Border
Texas shares a 1,254 mile border with our number one trading partner, Mexico. More than 1/3 of Texas citizens can trace their lineage to our southern neighbor and relationships of family, friends and free enterprise flow across the border to the benefit of both. However, criminals also see our border as a gateway to their own illicit prosperity, requiring Texas to maintain an aggressive approach to border security.
